Sixty-five years ago a dream took root. That dream blossomed into Willow Grove Missionary Baptist Church. Right here on this very spot in Detroit Michigan. Willow Grove wasn’t built overnight. It started with an idea. A simple idea to serve God and the community.

He and his family started with just a farmhouse and a barn. Their first services were held in the farmhouse. Later they converted the barn into a makeshift sanctuary.
Imagine the dedication. The small group of pioneers worked tirelessly. They removed concrete cow stalls and chicken roosts. They installed new studs poured cement and painted the walls. They even created a baptismal pond using a private pond on a nearby turkey farm.
The church soon outgrew its humble beginnings. A new building was constructed. The original farmhouse was demolished. The barn too was eventually torn down to make way for expansion. Yet the spirit of Willow Grove Missionary Baptist Church remained. It continued to grow its congregation expanded and its ministries flourished.
Throughout the years Willow Grove faced many challenges. The church adapted to changing times. It endured periods of growth and periods of transition. Different pastors led the congregation each leaving their mark on the church. The church expanded its facilities adding a Sunday School wing and a Christian Education wing.
Willow Grove Missionary Baptist Church has always been more than just a place of worship. It has been a center of community life. The church provided support for various outreach programs. These included the Baby Manna ministry which provided formula to mothers in need. The church also partnered with organizations like CROP providing meals for the hungry and assisting with disaster relief efforts. A thriving daycare operated for nearly three decades.
Today Willow Grove Missionary Baptist Church stands tall. It is a testament to the enduring power of faith and community. It continues to serve the people of Detroit.
