Beneath the grand Tudor-Jacobean facade of Willistead Manor lies a tale of family legacy. This magnificent 36-room mansion sits within a 15-acre park. It offers a glimpse into Windsor’s past. Willistead Manor was built in 1906 for Edward Chandler Walker. He was the second son of Hiram Walker. Hiram Walker was the founder of the world-renowned distillery.

Picture Edward and his wife, Mary Elizabeth Griffin Walker, moving into their new home. The year was 1906. Detroit architect Albert Kahn designed Willistead Manor. He also designed the Coach House and the Gate House. The estate spans 15 acres. It truly spared no expense in its construction.

Edward named the estate to honor his older brother Willis. Willis had passed away some years before. Imagine the parties, the gatherings, and the life within these walls.

One unique fact about Willistead Manor is that it had only one bedroom. Edward and Mary had no children. The coach houses provided ample room for guests. It’s an interesting detail reflecting their lifestyle.

Edward lived at Willistead Manor until his death in 1915. He was buried in St. Mary’s churchyard across the street. Five years later, the Walker family gifted Willistead Manor to the Town of Walkerville.

In 1935, the City of Windsor inherited this magnificent gift. Over the years, Willistead Manor has served many roles. It was once a public library and an art gallery. Today, Willistead Manor hosts weddings and receptions. It is also a venue for theatre performances and poetry readings.
