Established in 1918 the Willingdon Sports Club stands as a testament to Mumbai’s rich history. Lord Willingdon the then Governor of Bombay founded this exclusive club. The Willingdon Sports Club became one of the first to welcome indigenous Indians before Partition. This progressive decision cemented its place in Mumbai’s social fabric.

Today the Willingdon Sports Club remains one of the most prestigious clubs in India. Membership is highly coveted and incredibly exclusive. Since 1985 only children of existing members can apply. Six tennis courts squash and badminton courts are also available. Members can relax by the swimming pool. Or they can enjoy the club’s several dining options including a formal dining room a semi-formal dining room a bar a garden cafe and a bakery. Even a plant nursery exists for members to enjoy.

However there was a surprising incident. Award-winning director Bimal Roy was initially denied entry because of his attire a dhoti. This incident highlights the rigid social codes of that era. The club also has a quirky history. After a fire destroyed the original bar the bakery was transformed into a vibrant pub. It even hosts a mini-nightclub on weekends.
