Picture this. You are standing before the William Harvey House a remarkable piece of Charleston’s history. This unassuming building at 110 Broad Street whispers tales of merchants governors and prominent families.

Built in 1728 the William Harvey House is one of Charleston’s oldest structures. It has survived the city’s five great fires a testament to its resilience. William Harvey a merchant built it originally as a rental property. Later it became home to James Glen the longest-serving royal governor of the colony. Glen’s time here was marked by his significant involvement in Indian affairs.

After Glen’s departure the house changed hands. It was acquired by Ralph Izard a member of a prominent Charleston family. The Izard family owned The Elms a rice plantation on the Cooper River. Following the Izard’s ownership the house was purchased by Mary Izard Poinsett and her husband Joel in 1837.

Joel Poinsett a physician and amateur botanist made significant contributions to public service. He served as a South Carolina representative a member of the US Congress and the US Secretary of War. He was also the first US Ambassador to Mexico. But perhaps his most enduring legacy to Charleston is the poinsettia. This iconic Christmas flower which he discovered in Mexico adorns homes throughout the city during the holiday season. We even celebrate Poinsettia Day each December 12th.

Later the William Harvey House underwent transformations. It was remodeled with Victorian details and served as a grocery store for nearly a century. Today beautifully restored it stands as a single-family residence a living link to Charleston’s rich past.

The William Harvey House isn’t just a building. It is a time capsule a story etched in brick and mortar. It’s a reminder of the people who lived here the events that shaped them and the enduring legacy of Charleston. So take a moment to appreciate this historic treasure.
