Tucked away in Corona Queens lies William F Moore Park. A small triangle of land it holds a powerful history. It honors William F Moore a Marine private killed in World War I. He grew up nearby. He enlisted in April 1917. He died in 1918 at Belleau Wood. This was one of the bloodiest battles for the US.

Mapped as parkland in 1922 the city acquired it in 1924. Originally Corona Heights Triangle it was renamed in 1929. Moore was reportedly the first neighborhood soldier killed in the war. A 40-foot strip was later removed for street widening.

A striking tablet by sculptor James S J Novelli stands in the park. It commemorates 49 local residents who died in World War I. Other memorials honor US military personnel killed in Beirut in 1983 and victims of the September 11 2001 attacks. A tree and tablet honor Joseph Lisa Sr a community leader.

In 1980 the park was renovated. Lights were added. This transformed the park. It became a vibrant hub for the neighborhood. Today you’ll find people playing bocce cards enjoying Italian ices.
