At William C. Bryant High School, a simple question echoed through the halls for decades: “Who was this Bryant fellow anyway?” William C. Bryant High School, nestled in Long Island City, Queens, stands as a testament to a man whose name might not ring bells for everyone, but whose life intertwined with poetry, journalism, and even the creation of Central Park. The school, educating grades 9 through 12, carries the legacy of William Cullen Bryant, a figure far more influential than many realize. Founded in 1889, William C. Bryant High School first occupied a building on Wilbur Avenue, now known as 41st Avenue. This four-story brick structure, completed in 1904, served the burgeoning student population of Long Island City. However, the school outgrew its original home and relocated to its present location on 31st Avenue in 1939. The old building then became Long Island City High School. A fascinating piece of William C. Bryant High School’s history involves a majestic pipe organ. In 1925, the M.P. Möller Company installed an impressive three-manual organ in the auditorium. This organ, Opus 4204, was one of four identical instruments installed in New York City high schools at the time. It boasted 61 registers, 38 stops, and 31 ranks, filling the auditorium with rich sounds. William C. Bryant High School’s alumni have made their mark in diverse fields. Actress Ethel Merman, whose booming voice captivated Broadway audiences, is a notable alumna. The school’s auditorium is proudly named in her honor, the Ethel Merman Theater. Another prominent alumnus, Joel Klein, served as chancellor of the New York City Department of Education. From the arts to public service, Bryant’s legacy continues through the achievements of its graduates. Even Hollywood came calling. While “A Bronx Tale” wasn’t filmed at Bryant, the school’s unique atmosphere caught the eye of Robert De Niro, who even paid a visit. The hit show “Ugly Betty” also filmed episodes at the school, bringing a touch of glamour to the hallways. So, the next time you pass William C. Bryant High School, remember, it’s more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a place where history, art, and the echoes of remarkable lives intertwine, inspiring generations to pursue their dreams.
