“Imagine a young family seeking a place to call home.” That’s how the story of the William and Adele Skinner House begins. We stand before a testament to Galveston’s rich history. It is a beautiful Queen Anne-style home. The William and Adele Skinner House marker tells a tale of love, architecture, and preservation.

In 1895, William Cooke Skinner a local banker, and his wife Adele Preston Skinner sought to build a home. They wanted a place for their young family to grow. They purchased this very parcel of land. The Texas Historical Commission erected this marker in 2017 to commemorate their story.

The Skinners enlisted Charles William Bulger, a notable Texas architect. They commissioned him to design their dream home. Bulger completed the two-story house in 1896. The William and Adele Skinner House remains one of his most ornate residential designs.

Notice the primary facade. It boasts two gables. A gallery wraps around the southwest corner offering a view. The distinctive tripartite bay window catches the sunlight. Irregularly spaced windows are characteristic of the Queen Anne style. Most windows still have their original wooden shutters.

Step closer and observe the details. The William and Adele Skinner House features surviving original elements. Look for the interior ornamental trim. Don’t miss the stained glass in the stairwell. These features whisper stories of a bygone era.

This house is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark since 2017. It is a part of the East End National Landmark District. The William and Adele Skinner House has been featured on Galveston’s Annual Historic Homes Tour in 1976 and 2018. This shows its enduring appeal.

The William and Adele Skinner House is located at 1318 Sealy Street. The home still has its original iron fence. It has a lace-like exterior.

William Cooke Skinner lived from 1870 to 1953. Adele Preston Skinner lived from 1874 to 1966. Together, they created a lasting legacy in this beautiful home.

As you leave the William and Adele Skinner House remember its story. It is a story of family, architecture, and the dedication to preserving the past. The William and Adele Skinner House stands as a reminder of Galveston’s vibrant history.
