Seventy-five hectares of green This is Wilhelmsburger Inselpark. It’s a haven on Wilhelmsburg Island a large river island south of Hamburg’s city center. The park wasn’t always here. Before the International Garden Show in 2013 it was meadows small gardens and dense vegetation.

The International Garden Show transformed the area. It became a massive undertaking. The plan was to create a lasting public park. A green heart for Wilhelmsburg. A place for residents and visitors alike. It was to be sustainable and accessible.

The park opened to the public on October 14 2013. Visitors cross the Muharrem Acar Bridge a newly designed architectural feature. It’s near the newly built S-Bahn station. Then they pass the Gertrud-von-Thaden-Platz. Gertrud von Thaden was the editor of the Wilhelmsburger Zeitung for many years. She left a lasting impact on the area.

The park quickly became a popular destination. It offers a mix of nature and recreation. There are spacious lawns. There are grilling areas. There are play areas sports facilities. Even a canoe canal and a high ropes course. A terrace restaurant and the Willi Villa kiosk are popular spots.

Many elements from the Garden Show remain. Eleven gardens in the ‘World of Movement’ section still exist. This includes the sports and play areas. The Aqua Soccer pool remains a fun attraction. The Willi Villa kiosk remains open during the summer months. The park also has five playgrounds. These include imaginative spaces with names like ‘Desert Waves’ ‘Huts and Palaces’ and ‘Mysterious Island’.
