He was a publisher a crucial figure who shaped the literary scene of 19th-century Berlin. Wilhelm Ludwig Hertz founded his publishing house in 1847. He purchased the Bessersche Buchhandlung an already established bookshop. His imprint became synonymous with quality. His list included literary giants such as Theodor Fontane. The countless decisions shaping a writer’s career. Hertz published more than a thousand titles. These included works by Paul Heyse Gottfried Keller and Emanuel Geibel. He also played a significant role in the German booksellers’ association. He even served as its president in 1879. His son Hans Adolf joined the family business in 1875.
