Look up! Do you see the Wilhelm II Obelisk towering above us, a silent sentinel overlooking the city of Haifa? It’s a bit of history frozen in time, a reminder of a visit by a powerful emperor at the turn of the century. In 1898, Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany, a man known for his ambitious dreams and flamboyant personality, arrived in Haifa. He came at the invitation of the Ottoman Empire, a gesture of friendship and a show of power. His visit wasn’t just a sightseeing trip; it was intended to strengthen ties between the Ottoman Empire and Germany. He also came to inaugurate the newly built Church of the Redeemer in Jerusalem.

The Kaiser’s visit caused a sensation in Haifa. The town was small then, with a population of only 10,000 people. The streets were abuzz with excitement, as local residents gathered to witness the arrival of the German Emperor. The Kaiser, accompanied by his wife Augusta Victoria, was greeted with a lavish welcoming ceremony. He was showered with flowers and cheers as he rode through the town in a horse-drawn carriage, the German and Ottoman horsemen leading the procession. They enjoyed a panoramic view of the city, the Mediterranean Sea, and the German colony from Mount Carmel.

The Kaiser’s visit sparked significant interest in the German Templar colonies in Palestine. These were communities of German Protestants who had settled in the region in the 19th century. Their presence was strengthened because of this visit, which gave them a boost in their endeavors to acquire new lands and expand their activities. In fact, these colonies were the main reason why the Kaiser chose Haifa as a stop on his journey to Jerusalem.

This momentous occasion was commemorated with the construction of the Wilhelm II Obelisk in 1910. It was built by the engineer Gottlieb Schumacher, a testament to the Kaiser’s influence and a lasting mark on the landscape of Haifa. Standing tall by the Louis Promenade, the obelisk has seen a lot of history unfold in front of it. It survived the destruction of the British mandate period and was restored in 1982, a symbol of resilience and the enduring legacy of the past.
