In the heart of Hannover, a chilling tale unfolds. We stand before the grave of Wilhelm Großkopf, a young man whose life was tragically cut short. Wilhelm, or “Willi” as he was known, was a turner by trade, a member of the Workers’ Samaritan Federation, and a passionate supporter of socialist ideals. He was also a member of the Reichsbanner Schwarz-Rot-Gold, a paramilitary organization dedicated to defending the Weimar Republic against extremist threats. The year was 1933, a pivotal moment in German history. The Nazi party was gaining power, and violence against political opponents was escalating. In Hannover, the SA, the Nazi paramilitary wing, was terrorizing the streets. On February 22nd, Willi Großkopf, along with his colleague Wilhelm Heese, were assigned to protect an SPD election rally near the Lister Turm. They were members of a “Schufo” detachment, a protection unit formed to counter the rising tide of Nazi violence. During the rally, the SA launched a brutal attack. In the chaos, Willi Großkopf was shot in the back. He died at the young age of 23, a victim of the escalating political turmoil. A memorial plaque at the Lister Turm commemorates this tragic event. Wilhelm Großkopf’s grave serves as a stark reminder of the violence and brutality of the Nazi regime. It also stands as a testament to the courage of those who fought to defend democracy against tyranny. His story is a poignant echo of a dark chapter in German history, a reminder of the importance of vigilance and the defense of democratic values.
