Have you ever seen a flamingo up close? Right here at the Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary you can. This incredible sanctuary is a hidden gem nestled within the bustling city of Dubai. It’s a haven for wildlife a testament to Dubai’s commitment to conservation.
The Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary wasn’t always a protected area. In the 1970s and 80s Dubai’s rapid development drastically changed the landscape. The area was dredged altering the natural habitat. However in 1985 recognizing its importance the sanctuary was designated a protected site. New channels were built and mangroves were planted. This remarkable effort transformed the area into the thriving ecosystem it is today.
This urban wetland is a crucial habitat for hundreds of species. Roughly 266 species of fauna call it home along with 47 species of flora. The star of the show however is the Greater Flamingo Phoenicopterus roseus. These elegant birds are the most common and widespread flamingo species. They stand about 1.5 meters tall and can weigh between 2 and 4 kilograms. Their iconic pink color comes from the carotenoids in the shrimp Artemia salina they consume. Without these shrimp their feathers would lose their vibrant hue.
Imagine thousands of flamingos their pink feathers a striking contrast to the lush green mangroves. They gracefully wade through the shallow waters using their long legs and webbed feet to stir up the mud. They feed on small organisms like plankton and tiny fish. The Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary offers observation decks with binoculars for visitors to witness this spectacle. It is a truly magical experience seeing these birds thrive in the heart of a major city.
The sanctuary is more than just flamingos. You can also spot other birds like the Asian pied myna black-winged stilt and grey heron. Small mammals like the red fox and Arabian cap hare are also present though more elusive. The sanctuary operates from 7:30 AM to 5:30 PM in the winter and 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM in the summer. The flamingos are fed twice a day offering a captivating display of avian life.
