Wildheather Park in Houston isn’t just a park. It’s a story of community perseverance. Originally a simple 12-acre patch of grass with picnic tables a basketball court and a baseball backstop Wildheather Park lacked real amenities. Council Member Larry Green described it needing a serious facelift. For years residents dreamed of improvements. They voiced their desires to create a true community hub.
Their voices were heard. A $644000 renovation transformed Wildheather Park. Now it boasts a half-mile jogging trail a pavilion for gatherings exercise equipment a splash pad and a playground. Safety was a priority. Lamp posts illuminate the trail at night a gate controls access and bollards prevent vehicles from entering the grassy areas. The increased activity itself is expected to improve security.
The park’s redesign was a collaborative effort. The Parks and Recreation Department held public meetings. They sought community input shaping the park’s features to residents’ desires. The Wild Heather Civic Club led by President Danye Roland played a crucial role. They wanted a park walkable by everyone. A place where children could play safely and seniors could stroll. Townwood Park was too far away so Wildheather Park became their focus.
The renovation wasn’t without challenges. Crossing White Heather Drive to reach the park was dangerous. Council Member Green pledged new speed bumps to improve safety. The community celebrated the dedication of the new Wildheather Park in September 2016. The total project cost was $1663016. This included design construction site clearing utilities grading drainage new walkways trails lighting a splash pad a playground exercise equipment site furnishings a pavilion landscaping and irrigation.
Today Wildheather Park stands as a testament to community spirit. A place for recreation relaxation and connection. It’s more than just a park.
