How much does a church cost? That’s a question Wilderness Branch Baptist Church knows all too well. This historic church, founded in 1902, has seen its fair share of challenges over the years. Yet, its spirit remains unbroken. Wilderness Branch Baptist Church has a long and storied history. For over a century, it stood strong, a beacon of faith in Fort Bend County. But time, as it often does, took its toll. The original structure, weathered and worn, became unsafe. In 2017, the congregation made the difficult decision to vacate their cherished building. They began a new chapter, holding services at a nearby congregation while dreaming of a new home. Their current pastor, Bobby Lockridge, has been a driving force in their journey. Despite battling cancer, Pastor Lockridge has poured his heart into building a new church. The congregation rallied, raising an impressive $350,000 through bake sales, donations, and sheer determination. Construction began. The vision of a new Wilderness Branch Baptist Church began to take shape. Sadly, this journey wasn’t without obstacles. The church, new to the complexities of construction, faced disheartening setbacks. Dishonest contractors took advantage, leaving them nearly $50,000 short. One architect even vanished after being paid $12,000 for blueprints that never materialized. Yet, even in the face of adversity, the faith of Wilderness Branch Baptist Church never wavered. They continued to raise funds, determined to honor their history while building a brighter future. Their story, much like their partially constructed building, stands as a testament to their resilience. It reminds us that even in the wilderness, faith can be found, hope can bloom, and a community can come together to build something extraordinary.
