Feel the icy wind on your face. The Arctic Rescue rollercoaster looms before you a testament to thrilling adventure. This isn’t just any ride. It’s the successor to the Wild Arctic exhibit a beloved attraction that once captivated visitors with its motion simulator.
The Wild Arctic exhibit opened in 1997. It transported guests to a simulated Arctic research station via a motion-based helicopter ride. The ride was surprisingly sophisticated. It used the same motion technology as commercial and military flight simulators. Imagine being plunged into the heart of an Arctic storm feeling the simulated bumps and dips of a helicopter struggling against the elements.
But the original Wild Arctic was more than just a ride. It housed beluga whales walruses and harbor seals. Guests could also explore a recreated Arctic research station complete with simulated ice caves. Sadly polar bears were once part of the exhibit but after the last one died they were replaced by sea otters.
The Wild Arctic ride closed in 2020. SeaWorld San Diego decided to replace the simulator ride with something even more thrilling. Enter Arctic Rescue.
Arctic Rescue is a family launch straddle coaster. It’s the fastest and longest straddle coaster on the West Coast. Riders race through a simulated Arctic landscape on snowmobile-style vehicles experiencing three exhilarating launches and speeds up to 40 miles per hour. This ride doesn’t just mimic the Arctic experience. It integrates directly with the remaining Wild Arctic animal exhibit. As you zoom along the track you’ll catch glimpses of the belugas walruses and seals. It’s a unique blend of high-speed thrills and wildlife viewing.
So here you stand before the legacy of Wild Arctic. You can choose to feel the rush of the Arctic Rescue coaster or explore the preserved animal exhibit. Both offer their own kind of adventure in this icy corner of SeaWorld San Diego. Embrace the chill. Feel the excitement. This is your Arctic adventure.
