Who knew a digital world could inspire a physical tribute? Here in Słubice, Poland, stands a unique monument, a testament to the collaborative spirit of knowledge: the Wikipedia Monument. Unveiled on October 22, 2014, the Wikipedia Monument stands proudly in Frankfurt Square. It was the brainchild of Krzysztof Wojciechowski, a university professor, and brought to life by Armenian sculptor Mihran Hakobyan. The monument is a tribute to the countless volunteers who contribute to Wikipedia. Four figures, sculpted from fiber and resin, hold aloft a globe resembling the Wikipedia logo. This structure, reaching over two meters high, isn’t just about the platform itself. It embodies the spirit of collaboration, knowledge sharing, and the power of collective effort. The Słubice regional authorities funded the monument, costing roughly 50,000 złotys, equivalent to about $13,500 at the time. An inscription at the base reinforces this message, thanking the anonymous editors worldwide who make Wikipedia possible. It highlights the encyclopedia’s availability in over 280 languages and its vast collection of around 30 million articles. It was a momentous occasion when the monument was unveiled. Representatives from the Wikimedia Foundation and local Wikimedia chapters gathered to celebrate this unique tribute. Even Jimmy Wales, Wikipedia’s co-founder, expressed his amazement. He never imagined Wikipedia would be honored with a physical monument. This monument in Słubice is more than just a statue.
