Have you ever strolled through a neighborhood where history whispers from every cobblestone? Welcome to Freiburg’s Wiehre. This isn’t just any residential district. It’s a place where the past and present intertwine creating a captivating narrative.

The Wiehre’s name itself is a fascinating story. It originates from “Wehre” referring to the dikes built near the Dreisam River. These dikes reclaimed land from the floodplain. The area later became the Oberwiehre one of four sub-districts making up the Wiehre today. A document from 1008 CE mentions “Die Wiehre” a testament to its early existence. Long before Freiburg itself was even founded Wiehre existed as a small village. The village of Adelshausen situated in this vulnerable spot before the city walls suffered repeated plundering before its eventual destruction.

But the Wiehre wasn’t always a prestigious residential area. Initially it was primarily agricultural. A small commercial and artisan district thrived along the Dreisam River. A brewery even called this area home. The 19th century brought significant change. As the middle and upper-middle classes expanded so did the need for housing. The Wiehre transformed into an upscale residential area. Wealthy residents from areas struggling with cholera sought refuge here. They appreciated Freiburg’s comparatively cleaner water. These influential residents even pushed for a spur line of the Höllentalbahn. This train line not only benefited residents but also the Ganter Brewery. Founded in 1888 on the site of an old oil press this brewery became the largest in South Baden.

The Wiehre’s transformation was visually stunning. By 1899 the Johanneskirche a striking landmark known as the “Wiehredom” stood tall. Along with the Christuskirche it marked a significant architectural achievement for the area. The Loretto Hill saw significant development in the early 20th century. Impressive villas and a private hospital emerged. The Wiehre continued to expand southward until the 1920s. The Höllentalbahn tracks which once bisected the area were removed between 1933 and 1934 creating the current southern border. The old train station remains now a cafe and cultural center. This area played a small part in the resistance movement against the Nazis. The Wiehre survived World War II relatively unharmed aside from some damage to homes near the Old City.

Today the Wiehre remains a desirable area. Its high prices reflect its appeal to academics and the upper middle class. Charming villas and townhouses coexist with spacious apartment buildings. Shops especially eco-alternative boutiques and pubs are plentiful. A farmer’s market adds to its vibrant atmosphere. The Günterstalstraße remains the main shopping street. While heavily trafficked efforts to reduce congestion through one-way streets have been made. While students maintain their presence the Wiehre continues to be the dream neighborhood for many Freiburg residents. It’s a place where history and modern life harmoniously exist making the Wiehre a special and desirable location in Freiburg.
