Gazing upon Wiegandhaus, one might sense whispers of ancient civilizations mingling with the hum of modern Berlin. The Wiegandhaus stands as a testament to a unique intersection of archaeology and architecture. Built in 1911-1912, the Wiegandhaus was designed by the renowned architect Peter Behrens for Theodor Wiegand, an archaeologist and museum director. Theodor Wiegand, having excavated ancient cities like Priene, Miletus, and Didyma, desired a home that reflected his passion for classical antiquity. Behrens, known for his innovative approach, delivered a monumental neoclassical villa, a style unusual for residential buildings. The Wiegandhaus’s design subtly echoes elements of Behrens’s industrial architecture, blended with references to classical antiquity and even Turkish influences, likely reflecting Wiegand’s time in Constantinople. The front of the Wiegandhaus boasts a striking peristyle, reminiscent of House 33 in Priene, a Hellenistic-era dwelling. Behrens ingeniously reinterpreted this feature, transforming the intimate courtyard into a grand entrance, adding a touch of ancient grandeur to the modern villa. Inside, the Wiegandhaus originally housed six palatial rooms, furnished with exquisite pieces reflecting Wiegand’s refined taste. Remarkably, much of the original furnishings remain, offering a glimpse into the opulent lifestyle of the early 20th century. Wiegandhaus holds another layer of historical significance. It currently serves as the headquarters of the German Archaeological Institute (DAI). The DAI, having suffered damage to its previous location during the war, found a new home in Wiegandhaus in 1957. The building’s historical importance is further underscored by its status as a protected monument. The Wiegandhaus stands as a unique blend of past and present, where the echoes of ancient civilizations resonate within the walls of a modern architectural masterpiece.
