Imagine the mighty Chao Phraya River flowing past. Before you stands Wichai Prasit Fort. This is Bangkok’s oldest fort a relic of the glorious Ayutthaya kingdom.

Built around 1685-87 it played a crucial role in Siam’s defense. Constantine Phaulkon a Greek counselor to King Narai commissioned its construction. A French engineer de la Mare oversaw its building. It was originally named Wichaiyen Fort after Phaulkon’s title.

Wichai Prasit Fort didn’t just stand as a symbol of power. It saw action. The fort played a vital role in the Siege of Bangkok in 1688. This siege ultimately expelled the French from Siam. The fort’s strategic location opposite Wang Derm Palace is no accident. Its position made it ideally suited to protect against invaders approaching by sea.

Today Wichai Prasit Fort remains under the Royal Thai Army’s control. It serves as a venue for important events. You can often witness gun-salute ceremonies here. It’s a place where history and the present intertwine. The echoes of battles past mingle with the sounds of today’s ceremonies. A silent sentinel guarding Bangkok’s rich history.

The fort’s architectural blend of Thai and European styles is fascinating. The details are a testament to the influences shaping Thai culture throughout history. Sadly much of its original structure might be gone. But the fort remains a powerful reminder of Bangkok’s past. A place to reflect on centuries of history. A piece of Thailand’s heritage.

So stand here awhile. Absorb the history. Feel the weight of the centuries. Let the spirit of Wichai Prasit Fort wash over you. This isn’t just a fort. It’s a living story of courage and resilience. A legacy for all of Bangkok.
