A thousand-year lease. Can you believe it? That’s the remarkable agreement that secured Whitworth Park’s future. Right here in Manchester this green oasis opposite the Manchester Royal Infirmary has a story to tell.

Whitworth Park opened in 1890. It wasn’t always a park though. The land was known as Potters Field. It was transformed thanks to the generosity of Sir Joseph Whitworth. His legacy lives on not just in the park but also in the nearby Whitworth Art Gallery. He used his fortune to establish the Whitworth Institute. That institute secured the land for this beautiful space.

More than just a pretty place to stroll Whitworth Park has intriguing history. A bronze statue of King Edward VII stands proudly. It commemorates a royal visit in 1909. The statue is Grade II listed. It’s a striking piece of public art.

But there’s a secret. A hidden hoax. A sign in the park mentions a meteor. It fell on Friday the 13th February 2015. The artist Cornelia Parker created this plaque. It’s a playful reference to one of her artworks. It’s a bit of a clever joke isn’t it? A bit of smart-aleck knowledge for you.

Beyond the human history Whitworth Park teems with life. Goldfinches greenfinches and even ring-necked parakeets call it home. These colourful birds add to the vibrancy of this special place. However some worry about the parakeets. They may be an invasive species harming native wildlife. Something to consider while you enjoy the park’s beauty.

So next time you’re in Manchester take some time to explore Whitworth Park. Reflect on its fascinating past. Appreciate its present beauty. Remember the thousand-year lease. Remember the clever hoax. And remember the vibrant birdlife. It’s a hidden gem. A small piece of history in the heart of a busy city.
