“Play is the highest form of research” said Albert Einstein. Here at Whittier Playground, those words ring true for generations of Boston’s children.

Whittier Playground is more than just swings and slides. It is a place where childhood memories are forged. It is a place where friendships begin. It is a place where imagination takes flight.

Let’s take a closer look. Playgrounds as we know them today weren’t always common. In the 19th century children played in the streets. This was dangerous due to increasing urbanization. Reformers sought safe spaces for children to play and develop.

Germany created “sand gardens” in 1885. These were designated play areas away from dangerous streets. Boston followed in 1886 establishing some of the first playgrounds in the United States.

The Playground Association of America formed in 1906. It promoted the idea of playgrounds in communities. They emphasized the importance of play for children’s development. Early playgrounds had separate play sections. There were areas for boys and girls. Playgrounds also had trained supervisors. They organized activities and taught lessons.

Early equipment featured galvanized steel pipes. Ladders and chains were common. These designs are now considered dangerous. Over time playgrounds evolved. Materials changed to include wood and plastics. Safety became a major concern.

The late 70s and 80s brought standardized equipment. Rounded edges and plastic became more common. This was a response to rising injury concerns. The 90s ushered in the modern playground era. Safety surfacing became standard. Recycled tires were used as a softer alternative.

Today Whittier Playground represents this evolution. It is a safe space for children to explore. It is a place for children to be creative. It is a place for children to connect with nature.

Whittier Playground also reflects a commitment to inclusivity. Growing Up Boulder partnered with Whittier International Elementary School. The goal was to design a playground accessible to all. Students learned about Universal Access Design. They considered how to make playgrounds inclusive for children of all abilities.

The students then recommended UAD elements to the city. The recommendations were for future playground installations. Whittier International Elementary is improving its playground. It is doing so with a GOCO grant. The project is student-led. It focuses on Universal Access Design. The goal is to create a neighborhood playground. It would provide recreational opportunities for everyone. This includes those with different abilities.

So as you watch the children laughing. As you watch them playing at Whittier Playground remember its history. Remember its purpose. Remember that play is essential for a child’s development. It fosters creativity and builds community.
