Henderson’s history is closely tied to World War II. The Basic Magnesium Plant opened in 1941. This plant processed magnesium for munitions and airplane components. Henderson became the second-largest city in Nevada because of the war.
The magnesium plant was essential. It supplied one-fourth of the magnesium used in World War II. The plant drew workers from all over the country.
Segregation was a reality. Although there was no segregation at the plant, Black workers faced it elsewhere. Carver Park was designated for Black workers. However, some whites threatened violence if more Black families moved closer.
Today, White School Park stands as a testament to Henderson’s growth. It’s a place for sports, recreation, and enjoying the outdoors. Remember, White School Park is open from 6:00 a.m. to midnight. Come make some memories.
