Founded in 1866 by Mrs Margaret Faucette White Rock Baptist Church stands as a testament to faith resilience and community. Imagine Mrs Faucette a woman of unwavering faith gathering her friends in a rented room. They prayed and sang laying the foundation for this magnificent church. Their small gatherings grew into a congregation. They purchased their first building site in 1877 for just $75. It was named White Rock Baptist Church because of a large white flint rock found on the property. This first church served as a beacon of hope for many years.
Over time White Rock Baptist Church expanded its reach. A larger brick building was erected in 1886. This building could seat approximately 350 people. The current structure a beautiful sanctuary capable of holding 1300 people was dedicated in 1977. It sits majestically on a six-acre tract of land. This building isn’t just bricks and mortar though. It’s a place where history echoes. It’s a place where countless souls have found comfort solace and spiritual growth.
Under the leadership of Dr Reginald Van Stephens who became pastor in 1995 the church flourished. He revitalized ministries created a thriving Christian education program and redefined the Missions Ministry. This ministry helps those in need through church help calls homeless shelters and senior citizen homes. Dr Stephens fostered a strong relationship between the church and C C Spaulding Elementary School. He also maintained White Rock’s role as a center for political activism and social causes in the African American community. He oversaw a $1.2 million renovation which included a Moeller pipe organ and stunning stained glass windows.
White Rock Baptist Church is more than just a place of worship. It is a vibrant community center with over fifty ministries. These ministries serve people of all ages. There’s a special focus on missions and service both locally and globally. The church is affiliated with The Progressive National Baptist Convention. It actively participates in area state and national Baptist Church associations. White Rock Baptist Church has indeed made a lasting impact on Durham North Carolina and beyond.
