Ever wondered where the name White Patch comes from? This coastal town on Bribie Island holds a secret in its name. I’m excited to share the story of White Patch with you.

White Patch, a tranquil locality in the City of Moreton Bay, offers a serene island lifestyle. With a population of just 150 people, it’s a peaceful escape. It’s located on the western side of Bribie Island. White Patch sits adjacent to the Pumicestone Channel.

Once called Bribie, the town was renamed White Patch on September 1, 1980. The name refers to a sand patch. This sand patch was once visible from the Pumicestone Channel.

Back in 1799, Matthew Flinders landed here. He beached his sloop Norfolk at White Patch for repairs. Imagine Flinders and his crew working on their ship right here.

In 1887, the Queensland Government sold 140 town lots. These lots were in the Town of Bribie, at the location known as “White Patch”. This marked the beginning of the settlement.

A cadastral map from June 1925 shows properties facing Pumicestone Channel. These properties were bordered by Maud Street, Charles Street and Bunbuba Street.

There’s even a quirky tale from November 1948. Fishermen at White Patch reported seeing a sea serpent. They described it as brown or yellow and 18 to 24 feet long. It had large eyes and was accompanied by smaller serpents.

The curator at the Queensland Museum believed it was a common sea snake. So, perhaps it was just a bit of local legend.

Today, White Patch is a residential area with a laid-back vibe. Residents enjoy walks on pristine beaches. They also enjoy fishing off the jetty. The nearby White Patch Esplanade Park offers walking trails. It also offers picnic areas for everyone.

While White Patch itself is mostly residential, essential amenities are close by. A short drive will get you to Bongaree. There you can find shops, cafes and restaurants.

White Patch offers a peaceful retreat. It has stunning water views and a relaxed atmosphere. It’s a place where you can connect with nature. It’s also a place where you can enjoy a true island living experience. As you leave White Patch today, remember its humble beginnings. Remember the sea serpent tales. Remember Matthew Flinders’ landing.
