Did John Winthrop pack a lunch for his 1632 expedition, only to find it contained just cheese? Here at Whip Hill, in the heart of what would become Stoneham, that very question hangs in the air. Whip Hill’s name might not be as famous as its Middlesex Fells neighbor, Bear Hill, aka “Cheese Rock”. But its history is interwoven with the very fabric of this land. Whip Hill, first officially marked on an 1895 map, stands as a quiet testament to the area’s evolution. From its likely origins as farmland for early settlers to its later inclusion in the expansive Middlesex Fells, Whip Hill has seen it all. Imagine those early farmers, looking north towards the “goodly plain” Winthrop described, their lives more connected to Woburn and Reading than distant Charlestown. The Andover and Medford Turnpike, now Route 28, brought change in 1806. Later, the railroad arrived in the 1860s. These advances connected Stoneham more closely to Boston. Whip Hill also boasts a modern connection, adjacent to the town park donated by James and Angie Crockett. He, a latex industry leader. She, an artificial flower artisan. Their Whip Hill Park, a legacy of beauty, echoes the “fair prospect” that Winthrop, with his cheesy lunch, might have glimpsed centuries ago. Whip Hill. A place where whispers of history blend seamlessly with the vibrant present.
