Have you ever gazed upon a manor, its very presence whispering tales of a bygone era? Whepstead Manor, standing proudly on Main Road in Wellington Point, is such a place. Its timbered facade, a testament to the architectural flair of the late 1800s, holds within its walls a story rich with the dreams and aspirations of a prominent Queensland family. Built in 1889 for Gilbert Burnett, a sawmill owner and influential member of the local community, Whepstead Manor was initially known as Fernbourne. Gilbert, a man of vision and ambition, had already cultivated the surrounding land, transforming it from a sugar plantation to a thriving sawmill, the largest of its kind in the colony. He envisioned a grand home to reflect his success, a legacy for his family. Designed by renowned architect Claude William Chambers, Fernbourne, as it was then called, was constructed with timber sourced from Gilbert’s very own sawmill, showcasing his entrepreneurial spirit. The house was a showstopper, with 14 rooms on three levels, an ornate timber staircase, and breathtaking views of Waterloo Bay and Moreton Bay. But the turn of the century brought an end to Gilbert’s prosperity. The economic boom that had fueled his success began to wane, and he was declared insolvent in 1891. His grand home, Fernbourne, was put up for auction, a poignant reminder of the cyclical nature of fortune. Over the years, the manor changed hands, each owner leaving their mark on its history. It served as a private hospital, a convalescent home, and even a restaurant. Today, Whepstead Manor stands as a testament to Gilbert Burnett’s legacy and the fascinating history of the Wellington Point area. It is a place where whispers of the past linger in the air, reminding us of the dreams and aspirations of those who came before us.
