Founded in 1888 by Lucy Wheelock Wheelock College holds a special place in Boston’s history. It began as Miss Wheelock’s Kindergarten Training School a testament to its focus on early childhood education. Imagine Lucy Wheelock a pioneer in her field training teachers for Boston’s growing immigrant population. Her vision expanded the school’s reach beyond kindergarten to include primary grades and eventually undergraduate and graduate programs.
Wheelock College wasn’t just about academics. It fostered a strong sense of community. Students were involved in numerous clubs and organizations. They participated in eleven NCAA Division III sports. The Wheelock Wildcats competed fiercely in the New England Collegiate Conference. The college also had a vibrant student life with 65% of undergraduates living on campus. A LEED-certified campus center housed a new student center dining hall and residence hall.
The college had a significant impact on the community. Wheelock students dedicated an estimated 193000 hours annually to community service. They partnered with local organizations such as Jumpstart mentoring children in Roxbury. The Wheelock Mattahunt Community Partnership was particularly impactful. It linked the college with the Mattapan community. The college even received the 2012 John Blackburn Award for this work.

Sadly Wheelock College’s independent journey ended in 2018. It merged with Boston University becoming the Boston University Wheelock College of Education and Human Development. Its commitment to early childhood education community engagement and student success continues to inspire. The Wheelock Family Theatre remains a vital part of the community. It brings theatre to thousands every year. The memory of Wheelock College lives on in its impressive legacy and its dedicated alumni.
