Standing before Wheatley High School in Houston, Texas, you’re not just looking at a building, but a testament to resilience, a beacon of hope in a community that’s weathered storms, both literal and metaphorical. This school has been a cornerstone of the Fifth Ward since it first opened its doors in 1927. Imagine, a time when the population of Black students was so large that a new building was constructed for a capacity of 3,500 students because the original building was overcrowded. The initial location was on Lyons Avenue, and then moved to 4900 Market Street in 1950. The building was designed in a modern style inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright. Just think, during that time it was regarded as the “finest Negro high school in the South,” boasting a gymnasium, an industrial arts facility and a swimming pool. Wheatley was more than just a school; it was a hub, a place where generations of students honed their talents, developed their voices, and nurtured their dreams. For many students, it served as a gateway to the world, with outstanding students and athletes being recruited by major universities. Wheatley has produced a long list of influential alumni, including former Congressman Mickey Leland, the first African-American U.S. Congresswoman from the Southern United States Barbara Jordan, and the first African-American president of Brown University, Ruth Simmons. The school’s legacy can be seen in the lives it has touched and the impact its graduates have made. In 2006, a new $35 million campus opened on Providence Street, and the old one was demolished. Today, Wheatley continues to inspire and shape young minds and provide opportunities. The school’s story is one of overcoming challenges, achieving success, and building a legacy of excellence. Now, as this school enters the next chapter of its story, you can’t help but get a feeling of hope knowing that Wheatley High School will continue to be a force for good in Houston.
