“Imagine a whale breaching on Broadway!” It sounds like a fantasy, but it was reality. The Whale Statue, or rather “Echoes – A Voice from Uncharted Waters,” once graced the Garment District.
This wasn’t just any statue. Echoes was a monumental steel whale. It stretched an impressive 55 feet long. The Garment District Alliance unveiled it as an interactive public art display. Its purpose was to make you think.
The artist behind this creation was Mathias Gmachl. He is a designer and researcher. He wanted people to consider how our daily lives affect nature. The Whale Statue stood on the Broadway plazas. It was between 38th and 39th Streets. It was free for everyone to experience.
