Consider this a journey back to 1641. This is where Westwood’s story begins long before it officially became Westwood. It was then part of Dedham, a precinct known as West Dedham.

Westwood wasn’t always Westwood. There was a debate about its name. The original suggestion was “Town of Nahatan.” But Nahant, another town, objected due to the similarity in names. To avoid conflict and speed up incorporation the name was changed to Westwood in 1897.

Westwood is a town with a motto. “Committed to service.” That is seen in its history and its present. It is located in Norfolk County Massachusetts. Westwood covers approximately 11.1 square miles. That is about 28.8 square kilometers.

Westwood’s origins lie in Dedham. Residents of what was then West Dedham, felt disconnected from the Calvinist views prevalent in Dedham. They sought their own identity which ultimately led to incorporation. This separation wasn’t about animosity. It was about differing views and a desire for self-governance.

Westwood has a fascinating blend of old and new. The town seal includes a drawing of the Town Pound. Lt. Joseph Colburn built it in 1700 for forty shillings. This pound was for stray animals. It is a symbol of Westwood’s long history.

Westwood has several points of interest. Hale, formerly Hale Reservation is one. It spans 1137 acres. You can find beaches and walking trails there. The Westwood Library, rebuilt in 2013, is another. Also, there is the Colburn School, dating back to 1877.

Westwood was ranked as one of the best places to live. CNN/Money and Money magazine ranked Westwood 13th in 2005. That was based on factors like schools, safety and community.

Westwood is home to several houses of worship. These include the First Baptist Church of Westwood and the First Parish of Westwood United Church. There is also Temple Beth David and St. Denis Parish. St. John’s Episcopal Church and St. Margaret Mary Parish complete the list. These reflect the diverse religious community in Westwood.

Westwood offers convenient transportation options. Route 128 station is served by the MBTA Commuter Rail and Amtrak. Islington station also provides MBTA Commuter Rail access.

Westwood has some interesting trivia. It was a dry town until 2005. Restaurants can now obtain liquor licenses. Westwood is home to the oldest animal pound in the United States.

Westwood has produced notable people. These include acoustic engineer Leo Beranek and MMA fighter Kenny Florian. NFL quarterback Matt Hasselbeck also hails from Westwood.

Westwood, a town once part of Dedham, now stands on its own. It offers a blend of history community and modern amenities. From its animal pound to its notable residents Westwood is a town with a story to tell.
