“Did you know that Westside Baptist Church started its journey not here in Los Angeles but in Boynton Beach Florida?” Westside Baptist Church wasn’t always a fixture on Centinela Avenue. It began in 1978. It was then known as Westside Baptist Chapel. Pastor Ben “Bro. Ben” Tidwell led the first service. Nineteen people attended that Sunday morning in a metal building. This building now serves as the Fellowship Hall. The church’s growth was phenomenal. By 1980 it boasted 207 charter members. The congregation quickly outgrew its initial space. In 1985 they established a Childcare Development Center. Thirty-nine children enrolled right away. The CDC provided crucial outreach to families in the community. This early success fueled the church’s ambition. By 1986 Westside Baptist Church needed a larger sanctuary. They also needed a bigger CDC facility. The members voted to build. Groundbreaking for the new buildings occurred in 1988. The new CDC opened in 1989 with 114 children enrolled. Tragically Pastor Tidwell passed away in March 1990. He died during a morning service. The choir was singing “How Great Thou Art.” One week later services began in the new sanctuary. Pastor Tidwell left a powerful legacy. His legacy was one of loving God and loving neighbors. That mission continues today under the leadership of Pastor Manny Barahona. Westside Baptist Church’s story is one of growth faith and community. It is a testament to the enduring power of faith and the importance of serving others. So here we stand today at this remarkable place of worship. A place that has witnessed years of growth resilience and unwavering devotion.
