Westmount’s strength lies in its citizens’ faithfulness. That’s what its motto says. A captivating blend of history and modern life awaits you here. Westmount a city nestled on the southwestern slope of Mount Royal has a rich past. First Nations peoples inhabited this land for millennia. Prehistoric burial sites were discovered here. When French colonists arrived in the 17th century the area had various names including La Petite Montagne. Hurtubise House the oldest surviving building stands as a testament to this era.

In 1874 the Village of Côte St-Antoine was incorporated. It later became Westmount in 1895. This reflected the area’s location and large English-speaking population. Westmount became a wealthy residential area. It boasted some of Montreal’s most affluent families including the Bronfmans and the Molsons. This affluence made it a target of FLQ bombings in the 1960s.

Westmount experienced a brief merger with Montreal in 2002. However a referendum in 2004 led to its reconstitution as an independent city in 2006. The debate over the merger highlighted the city’s distinct anglophone identity. Mayor Peter Trent and city council fiercely defended Westmount’s independence. Municipal Affairs Minister Louise Harel’s criticism sparked controversy. This illustrated the complex relationship between Westmount and Montreal. Westmount remains an independent city yet part of Montreal’s urban agglomeration.

Westmount is a vibrant community. Its charming streets are lined with beautiful Victorian homes. Many parks such as Westmount Park and King George Park add to its green spaces. The city’s own electricity company Hydro-Westmount provides power. Westmount also hosts two Canadian Forces Reserve units. The Westmount Recreation Centre is a major hub for sports and recreation. The city boasts impressive buildings such as Place Alexis Nihon and Westmount Square. Designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe Westmount Square was largely funded by Samuel Bronfman. Westmount is home to renowned educational institutions. These include Dawson College and Marianopolis College. Westmount High School is notable for pioneering French Immersion programs.
