How high do you think Westmount Summit actually is? Standing before Westmount Summit you are at one of three peaks of Mount Royal. This majestic peak rises approximately 201 metres above sea level. It’s not just a hill it’s a significant landmark in the heart of Westmount Quebec.

Westmount Summit boasts a rich history. In 1895 McGill University acquired land here. Their plan was to build an observatory. They even imposed height restrictions on nearby buildings. This ensured clear views from their planned astronomical facility. The observatory’s use was short lived. Light and air pollution from growing Montreal hampered observations.

In 1940 McGill sold the land. The City of Westmount purchased it for $300000. They committed to keeping it a park forever. That’s how Summit Woods was born. This 23 hectare urban forest is Westmount’s largest park. Today it thrives with diverse wildlife. Around twenty mammal species call it home. You’ll also find 150 bird species thousands of insects snakes and reptiles. It’s a vibrant ecosystem in the middle of a bustling city.

The park also holds a special place for dog lovers. Summit Woods is a designated dog run. However there are leashing rules. These rules vary depending on the season. This helps protect the area’s bird and wildflower sanctuary. The area is a haven for birdwatchers and dog walkers alike. Many still admire the massive foundation blocks. These blocks were once used for the telescopes of the observatory.

Westmount Summit is more than just a geographical feature. It is a historical site a natural sanctuary and a beloved community space. It’s a testament to the ongoing effort to balance urban development with nature’s beauty. The view from the lookout on the southern face is breathtaking.
