Picture the imposing Westmount Baptist Church. Its Neo-Classical Renaissance style speaks of grandeur. This isn’t just any church. It’s a cornerstone of Westmount’s history.

Westmount Baptist Church stands proudly on Sherbrooke Street. Its presence is a testament to faith and community. The church wasn’t always here. Its story began much earlier. In 1902 members from three other Baptist churches united. They created the Westmount Baptist Church. Initially services were held in the Queen’s Theatre. This wasn’t a permanent solution.

The congregation yearned for a space of their own. That dream materialized in 1924. The cornerstone of the current building was laid. Honourable Albert Matthews a former member and future Lieutenant Governor of Ontario performed the ceremony. The building itself wasn’t dedicated until the following year. The late Reverend Gabriel Reid Maguire led the dedication ceremony. He was the pastor at that time. Architect Sydney Comber designed the church. His neoclassical vision has become a Westmount landmark.

The church is more than just a beautiful building. It’s a vibrant community hub. It’s a place of worship. It is a space for prayer and fellowship. The church continues its mission. The building provides a place of sanctuary. It offers support to the community. It plays an important role in the social fabric of Westmount. The building features many character-defining elements. These are important to preserve. The Westmount Heritage Council is working to ensure the church’s future. This is in collaboration with the congregation. They are exploring ways to use the building. They aim to balance its religious function with community needs.

Today Westmount Baptist Church remains a vital part of Westmount. It continues to serve its congregation and the wider community. It stands as a symbol of faith resilience and community spirit. It’s a story written in stone and lived in faith. A story worth remembering. A story worth sharing.
