Imagine a place steeped in history a place where the echoes of medieval farmers and the hum of modern life intertwine That place is Westick in Dortmund Germany.

Before you stands Westick a Dortmund district with a story stretching back centuries. Its name itself whispers secrets. Westick meaning ‘westerly situated settlement’ hints at its origins a village nestled on the western edge of a larger community. Long before Dortmund’s industrial boom Westick was a farming community part of the Essen Abbey’s lands. Records from around 1220 mention Westick as Westerwic. This confirms its ancient roots.

Fast forward to the late Middle Ages. Westick as Westrick was a Bauernschaft a farming community within the County of Mark. The Schatzbuch der Grafschaft Mark a tax register from 1486 reveals fascinating details. It shows that Westick’s five taxable landowners paid anywhere from one to six gold guilders in taxes. These modest sums paint a picture of a self-sufficient rural existence. The amounts varied depending on the size and productivity of their farms. This tells us that there was a degree of economic disparity even in this small community.

The 18th century saw Westick in a somewhat altered state. The tax registers of 1705 list seven taxable individuals in Westerich the name slightly changed over the centuries. These records offer glimpses into the daily lives of its inhabitants. The number of taxpayers shows a modest population growth from the fifteenth to the eighteenth century. They worked their land supporting themselves and their families.

By the 19th century Westick was a rural commune in the Dortmund district. An 1885 census recorded 393 inhabitants 29 houses and roughly 173 square kilometers of land. A significant portion of this land was arable. Fields of grain likely dotted the landscape. The area was not completely built up. The existence of woods points to a relatively untouched natural environment around the village. Westick’s relative isolation is emphasized by the fact that its access was limited to two main roads.

Today Westick boasts a football field a track and field facility a gas station a bakery cafe and a kiosk. It is not just a place of agricultural history anymore. However it retains a strong sense of community. Local businesses serve the residents and visitors alike. The amenities suggest a thriving village. Westick although connected to Dortmund feels distinct. It retains a feeling of its rural past despite its modern amenities. The combination of old and new is what makes Westick so unique.
