Around 500 AD five fortified farms were founded by the Brukterers. This is the origin of Westhofen. Can you imagine? This small settlement near the Ruhr River would one day become a significant place. Westhofen’s name itself meaning “strong farms”.

Westhofen played a role in the history of Charlemagne. In 775 he visited Westhofen while besieging the Saxon Sigiburg. He later conquered the fort. Charlemagne raised Westhofen to the status of an imperial estate. This boosted Westhofen’s importance.

Officially documented in 1228 Westhofen later belonged to the Amt Schwerte. It was part of the County of Mark. Agriculture and crafts characterized life in Westhofen. It was one of the Hanseatic cities. The Westhofen custom Sup Peiter also originated during this time. In 1324 Count Engelbert II declared Westhofen a free city. This granted residents privileges. These included lower jurisdiction and the right to elect a mayor.

A devastating city fire in 1708 destroyed many houses and buildings in Westhofen. The status of freedom ended in 1723. Prussian King Frederick William I. abolished Westhofen’s self-governance. Citizens resisted until 1734 but their efforts were in vain.

After the Congress of Vienna Westhofen became part of the Dortmund district. This was in the Arnsberg administrative district. Westhofen’s importance continued. The Westhofener Kreuz the junction of the A1 and A45 motorways is named after Westhofen. It is a significant traffic hub.

In 1975 most of Westhofen was incorporated into Schwerte. The Buchholz district became part of Dortmund. Westhofen’s history is rich and diverse. Its evolution from a small settlement to a significant center is remarkable. The legacy of Westhofen continues today. It remains an integral part of the greater Dortmund area.
