Here stands the Westhafenbrücke, a gateway to a district reborn. Today, we’ll explore the bridge’s surroundings. We will see how it connects the modern Westhafen to the heart of Frankfurt.

The Westhafen, or West Harbor, wasn’t always a collection of modern buildings. Once, it was a vital inland port. It served Frankfurt for many decades. Established in 1886, the Westhafen provided a safe winter harbor. Ships sought refuge here from icy conditions.

Imagine cargo ships lining the docks. Picture the hustle and bustle of trade. The Westhafen was crucial for Frankfurt’s industry. A large granary once stood here. Its purpose was to supply the city with grain during emergencies.

But times changed. Goods transportation shifted to other methods. The Westhafen’s importance dwindled. Meanwhile, Frankfurt’s population grew. The need for central living and working spaces increased.

In 1993, Frankfurt’s city council made a decision. They resolved to transform the twelve-hectare harbor area. It would become a modern urban quarter. The vision included homes for 2,000 residents. Offices, shops, and restaurants would create 3,000 jobs. The harbor basin would remain. Jetties would bridge it, creating a marina. Construction began around 2000. Much of the work was completed by 2010.

As you stand on the Westhafenbrücke, look around. Notice the blend of old and new. To the east, you’ll see Main Bank West. This area is slated for future high-rise development. The Westhafen Tower marks the eastern entrance. This glazed office tower has a circular floor plan. Completed in 2003, it was among the first buildings in the redeveloped Westhafen. Locals affectionately call it “Geripptes” or the “apple wine tower”. Its glass facade resembles a traditional apple wine glass.

On the western side, near the Main-Neckar Bridge, stand modern office buildings. The Westhafen Gatehouse and Westhafen Pier stand before the Thermal Power Station West. Don’t miss the Pressurized Water Works building. This preserved structure is the last historical remnant of the former port. It is part of the Rhein-Main Industrial Culture Route.

The harbor mole extends to the Flusskrebssteg. Here, twelve unique seven-story houses stand. Some are built on stilts in the water. Each has its own jetty.

Take a walk along the river Main. Explore the Westhafen’s island tip. Consider stopping at one of the restaurants. These include Frankfurter Botschaft, L’Osteria, and Druckwasserwerk. The Marina West Harbor offers boat trips. Skyline Boating even lets you rent a boat without a license.

The Westhafenbrücke offers a vantage point. From here, you can see the transformation. It is a testament to Frankfurt’s ability to adapt. The city embraces the future while preserving its past.
