A phoenix rising from ashes that’s Western International High School. Right here on Scotten Street stands a testament to resilience. This isn’t just a school it’s a living legacy.

Western International High School opened in 1898. It started as Western High School. Classes initially took place in the Webster School. A new building was constructed shortly after.

Tragedy struck in 1935. A devastating fire completely destroyed the campus. Remarkably no one was injured. The incident didn’t stop the school’s spirit. Thanks to federal aid a new Western High School rose. The Public Works Administration funded the rebuilding. The cost was $216381. This is over $4600000 today. The new school opened in 1937. It was a magnificent structure. It included a huge auditorium a large cafeteria and state-of-the-art laboratories.

Western International High School wasn’t just a place for learning. It was also a place of spirited competition. The school had a long-standing rivalry with Southwestern High School. This rivalry ended in 2012 when Southwestern closed. Western absorbed many of its students. The closure caused protests. Students from both schools marched demanding better education and protesting DPS policies.

Through the years Western International High School adapted. It became part of the Clark Park K-12 Educational Comunidad in 2015. This community focus is a cornerstone of the school’s identity.

Western International High School is much more than bricks and mortar. It’s a melting pot of cultures. It’s the most culturally diverse public high school in Detroit. Its student body is a vibrant mix of Hispanic Latino African American Caucasian and other ethnicities. Many students speak Spanish and French. This diversity enriches the school. It gives the students a unique perspective.

The school has produced notable alumni. Ken Doherty an Olympic athlete and author. John Briley an Academy Award-winning screenwriter. John Dudeck a renowned swimmer. Even several MLB players and an NFL star attended Western. Ron Simpkins a football player and coach for the Cowboys. He coached for eighteen years. He was an all-American and even played in the Super Bowl.
