Can you hear the echoes of 1960? That’s when Western High School first opened its doors. It became the third high school in Las Vegas. Las Vegas High School opened in 1931. Rancho High School followed in 1954. Western joined them to educate the growing city.
Western High School sits at 4601 West Bonanza Road. Its location is central to its story. It is a public school in the Clark County School District. The school’s motto is “Honor the past, Challenge the future”. These words guide the students and staff every day.
In 2011, Western faced challenges. It was identified as a low-performing school. This led to significant changes. Western adopted a new approach. It introduced a curriculum focused on STEM. Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math became the focus.
The campus transformed over the years. A major modernization project was undertaken. An outdated facility needed replacement. Construction occurred in phases. This allowed school to continue with minimal disruption.
A new gymnasium was completed in 2002. A theater complex followed in 2005. A three-story classroom building opened in 2006. This building added 114,000 square feet of instructional space. It included classrooms and administrative offices.
The new building was designed with energy efficiency in mind. It uses sustainable design principles. Architectural daylighting improves the environment. Indoor air quality is also a priority.
The building’s design incorporates the “house concept”. This creates smaller learning communities. It fosters a more intimate academic environment. The ground level houses administration and shared classrooms. The second and third floors are organized around the “houses”.
In 2007, the final phase of the campus replacement was completed. A two-story academic building was added. Western High School had a fresh, modern look.
Western High School boasts notable alumni. Fred Cole was the lead singer for several bands. Lawrence Guy plays defensive tackle for the New England Patriots. Corinna Harney was Playboy’s Playmate of the Year in 1992. Frank Hawkins is a former NFL player. Nicole Malachowski was the first female pilot for the Thunderbirds. Sean McCaw played professional basketball. Nick Oshiro is the drummer for Static-X. Robin Sendlein played linebacker in the NFL. Brett Sperry is a video game pioneer. Ronnie Vannucci Jr. drums for The Killers.
Today, Western High School continues to educate students. The school has about 2,745 students. There is a student to teacher ratio of about 25 to 1. The school colors are Columbia Blue, Red, and White. The sports teams are known as the Warriors. Their rival is Ed W. Clark High School. Western High School stands as a beacon of education in Las Vegas.
