Question: Ever wondered where Frankfurt’s wealthiest residents reside? Today, we are in Westend Nord. It is a district known for its grand architecture and high-end living.

Westend Nord is more than just a neighborhood. It is a symbol of Frankfurt’s transformation. It evolved from farmland to a sought-after residential area. Today, Westend Nord stands as a testament to the city’s vibrant history.

In the 19th century, Frankfurt’s fortifications were torn down. This spurred growth in areas like Westend Nord. Spacious villas and gardens began to appear. This attracted wealthy families. The district quickly became known for its upscale character. Many of these buildings still stand today. They whisper stories of a bygone era.

The northern part of Westend Nord has always been unique. The Grüneburgpark provided open space. In 1930, the I.G. Farben Building was built. This added a new layer to the district’s identity. It served as a significant landmark. During World War II, the Westend became part of Frankfurt-Nord. The police station in Lindenstraße became the center of the Frankfurt Gestapo.

Remarkably, Westend Nord avoided major damage during the war. After the war, the American military took over the I.G. Farben Building. They used it as their headquarters. In 1948, restrictions were lifted. The area began to transform again.

In the 1950s, Westend Nord remained a residential area. Most buildings were only four stories high. However, change was on the horizon. The city began to consider decentralizing the inner city. The Westend was set to become an expansion area. This led to property speculation and demolition of older buildings. Many residents were forced out.

The community fought back. They formed the Aktionsgemeinschaft Westend. This citizens’ initiative aimed to protect the district’s architectural heritage. They successfully campaigned for a modification ban in 1970. The city was forced to reconsider its plans.

The 1970s also saw the rise of the Frankfurter Häuserkampf. Students occupied buildings and protested. Clashes with the police were common. Despite these challenges, Westend Nord retained its unique character.

Today, Westend Nord boasts impressive architecture. It is one of Frankfurt’s most expensive residential areas. Modern buildings stand alongside historical ones. The district is home to the Goethe University. It is also near the Grüneburgpark.

The Grüneburgweg serves as a boundary. It divides Westend Nord from Westend Süd. Despite being divided, Westend Nord maintains its unique identity. It is a blend of history and modernity. It is a vibrant part of Frankfurt.
