What whispers of history echo through the streets of Westdene, Johannesburg? Westdene. A name that speaks of its location, nestled west of the city center, in a valley. Established in 1910, this suburb holds a rich tapestry of stories, woven into the very fabric of its streets and homes. Westdene wasn’t always the tranquil neighborhood you see today. It began as part of the sprawling Braamfontein farm in 1853. Imagine a landscape stretching from present-day Westdene to Houghton, and from Newtown to Linden. This vast expanse was subdivided and sold numerous times, eventually giving birth to the suburbs we know today, including Westdene, Auckland Park, and Cottesloe. Before the gold rush transformed Johannesburg, Hendrik Wilhelm Struben, a prospector, sought his fortune here in 1885. Though he found no gold, his efforts marked Westdene’s early connection to the city’s future prosperity. In the early 20th century, the quiet valley echoed with the clang of industry as the Wells Brickfield opened near the present-day Westdene Dam. Clay quarrying shaped the landscape, creating the dams that now define the area. One can almost picture the workers, their hands calloused from labor, shaping the very bricks that built Johannesburg. The tragedy of the Westdene Dam disaster in 1985 forever marked this tranquil space. A school bus carrying children from Vorentoe High School plunged into the dam. While some escaped, 42 children lost their lives, etching a day of sorrow into Westdene’s history. Yet, Westdene perseveres. Today, the suburb is known for its vibrant street art scene. The Westdene Graffiti Project, started in 2015, has transformed the suburb into an open-air art gallery, attracting visitors from near and far. Over 40 murals adorn its walls, breathing new life and color into the neighborhood. Westdene, a suburb of contrasts, where the echoes of industry, tragedy, and artistic expression intertwine, invites you to explore its streets and uncover its multifaceted story.
