Originally known as Stephen’s Ranch, Westdale whispers tales of transformation. This Westside neighborhood in Los Angeles wasn’t always the residential haven it is today. Imagine citrus orchards and bean fields stretching as far as the eye could see.

Fast forward to 1947. Real estate developer Paul Trousdale envisioned something new for Westdale. He hired architect Allen Siple to bring his vision to life. Together, they designed single-story tract homes. Trousdale and Siple collaborated on other neighborhoods, including Tahquitz River Estates and Trousdale Estates.

The first residents of Westdale were often soldiers returning from World War II. They used the GI Bill to settle in Southern California after serving in the Pacific Theater. These 450 homes were priced from $14500. As demand grew, two additional tracts were added to Westdale.

Streets were lined with trees like liquid ambers, pines and jacarandas. These trees are distinctive features that remain to this day. Natalie Fisher, an original resident, fondly remembers when the milkman delivered dairy products. The Helms Bakery truck brought fresh bread to her door. She calls it “small-town living on the Westside.”

Today, Westdale boasts 900 homes. Most were built in the 1940s. Many gardens still have old citrus trees from the original ranch. Architectural styles include Ranch-style, American Colonial Revival, Monterey Colonial Revival and Regency Revival.

The Westdale Homeowners’ Association plays an active role. They publish a quarterly newsletter called “The Westdale Villager”. They strive to maintain the neighborhood’s low-density and residential character. Ron Wynn, a board member, emphasizes their close-knit community. The neighbor welcome committee brings goodie baskets to new residents.

Westdale’s location offers convenient access to many places. It is located a block west of the 405 Freeway. Westdale is bounded by National Boulevard, Sawtelle Boulevard, Palms Boulevard and Bundy Drive.

Non-through streets enhance the community’s appeal. These streets prevent commuter shortcuts. Schools, parks, banks and shopping are just a short distance from any Westdale home.

Westdale is represented by the Mar Vista Community Council. This council ensures the voices of the people of Westdale are heard.
