What if I told you a Welsh pioneer’s dream helped shape West Valley City? West Valley City, a vibrant hub of activity, stands before us. It’s a city forged from the dreams of pioneers and the spirit of innovation. West Valley City began its story as a scattering of settlements, Hunter, Granger, Chesterfield, and Redwood. These small communities, initially drawn to the promise of fertile land “over Jordan,” west of the Jordan River, began to flourish. The Granger area, settled by Welsh pioneers in 1849, owes its name to Elias Smith, who recognized its agricultural potential. In 1876, Hunter joined the growing family of settlements, its orchards a testament to the hard work of families like the Nielsons, Rushtons, and Larsens. West Valley City officially came into being in 1980, consolidating these distinct communities into a united city. Fast forward to 2002, and West Valley City took center stage, hosting the men’s and women’s ice hockey events for the Winter Olympics at the Maverik Center. The city’s ambition didn’t stop there. In 2011, West Valley City embarked on a bold vision, a plan to create a downtown heart. This area, named Fairbourne Station after an early settler, was envisioned as a bustling hub. This multi-million dollar project aimed to unite a civic center, a hotel, residential areas, and vital transportation links, creating a true city center for West Valley City. From humble farming roots to a thriving modern city, West Valley City embodies the spirit of progress. It’s a place where history and innovation intertwine, a testament to the enduring human spirit that built this remarkable place.
