Who would have guessed that a church founded in 1943 on Adams Boulevard would become a cornerstone of Los Angeles? West Side Church of God, while not the original name, embodies the spirit of its predecessor, the West Angeles Church of God in Christ. The initial sanctuary, nestled near the bustling Santa Monica Freeway, held the dreams of a burgeoning community. Elder Clarence E. Church, the visionary behind it all, laid the foundation for what would become a spiritual beacon. After Elder Church’s passing in 1969, a dynamic leader emerged: Charles E. Blake. He shepherded the West Angeles Church of God in Christ through remarkable growth. The congregation outgrew its original home. In 1981, a new building on Crenshaw Boulevard opened its doors, boasting a 1,000-seat auditorium. The growth continued. Just eighteen years later, in 1999, an even grander structure arose on the same street, this time with a 5,000-seat auditorium. Under Blake’s leadership, West Angeles Church of God in Christ blossomed from a modest group of 40 members to a thriving community of over 24,000. The church continued its evolution. In 2019, the buildings on Crenshaw Boulevard were sold. This strategic move funded the construction of a Family Life Center. In 2022, leadership transitioned to Charles Blake II. He carries the torch, leading West Angeles Church of God in Christ into a new era. The church stands as a testament to its rich history and enduring impact on Los Angeles.
