“A spiritual powerhouse.” That is how some people described White Rock Baptist Church in West Philadelphia. The church’s story is a testament to faith. It is a story about resilience and community. We stand here today. We will delve into its past.
Initially, the congregation congregated in The Old Blacksmith Shop. It was located in the 600 block of North Forty-sixth Street. Imagine Reverend Smith leading services. The sounds of horses mixed with hymns. Between 1907 and 1909, the mission transformed. It became White Rock Baptist Church. They purchased a new location at 707-709 North Forty-sixth Street.
Reverend Robert William Goff became the pastor in 1909. He was a graduate of Lynchburg Theological Seminary. He breathed new life into the congregation. For 22 years, Rev. Goff preached with excellence. White Rock became known for its spiritual strength.
After Rev. Goff’s death in 1931, Reverend Willie Carthur Williamson took the helm in 1934. He came from Durham North Carolina. Reverend Williamson set goals and achieved them. The church outgrew its building. He recommended purchasing a new building at Fifty-second and Arch Streets. In March 1938, the members marched into their new church home.
Tragedy struck in 1955. A fire gutted the church building. It was a total loss. The congregation sought refuge at Vine Memorial Baptist Church. Later, they found a temporary home in the Fans Theatre. Imagine worship services in a movie theater.
Amidst this crisis, Rev. Williamson fell ill and later died. Reverend William J. Shaw then became the pastor in 1956. His first sermon focused on seeking a hearing heart from God. In 1958, White Rock Church found a new home at 53rd and Chestnut Streets. A cornerstone was laid to mark this relocation.
Pastor Shaw has led the church for over 65 years. During his tenure, White Rock has seen growth and change. Pastor Shaw also led African American Baptists at various levels. He even served as President of the National Baptist Convention.
