A single light pole stood alone. That’s how it began. The story of West Ridge Park First Baptist Church. In 1955 two empty lots became the unlikely birthplace of this vibrant congregation. Rev A Wallace the first pastor guided the small group. Six members initially. They shared a simple goal spreading God’s word.

West Ridge Park First Baptist Church wasn’t grand at first. It was humble. It was a small one-room building. Generous neighbors even provided electricity for that solitary light pole. That small light shone brightly attracting attention. It exemplified the church’s motto “Let your light so shine”. The church’s growth was remarkable. Membership increased to fifteen. Soon the original building was too small.

Deacon Johnnie Mayberry and his wife Francis stepped up. They provided collateral. This enabled the church to purchase an old barracks. The barracks became the new home of West Ridge Park First Baptist Church. In 1960 Rev CJ Bias became pastor. He led for twenty-one years. Under his leadership the old barracks transformed. It became a beautiful edifice a testament to faith and hard work.

The church continued to grow. It became a beacon for the community. In 1981 Rev Dr EL Hewitt Jr took the helm. He continued the work of outreach and spiritual growth. The church’s expanding membership fueled a desire to reach further. A transportation ministry was established. The first van arrived in 1984. Another van soon followed.

West Ridge Park First Baptist Church’s ministry extended beyond San Antonio. They traveled as far as Baton Rouge Louisiana. They ministered to people sharing God’s love. In 1992 a significant expansion occurred. A new educational building cafeteria and kitchen were added. A tape ministry was created. This ensured that the church’s message reached homes hospitals and nursing homes.

The church’s influence grew. Pastor Hewitt ordained Rev Jimmy Warren. Rev Warren then became pastor of Temple Missionary Baptist Church. Other pastors followed Rev Ray Weathers and Rev Eric Jones. Rev Ronald Glover also joined the ministry. West Ridge Park First Baptist Church stands as a testament to faith perseverance and the unwavering power of community. It’s a place where God’s presence is felt strongly. A place where you’re invited to become part of something special. A place of worship where the light shines brightly.
