In 1940, a tent revival meeting at 84th and Bartram sparked the beginnings of the West Philadelphia Seventh-day Adventist Church. Can you imagine the energy and excitement of those early gatherings? Elder F.B. Slater led the services, and by the end, twelve souls were baptized. The newly formed congregation, initially called Elmwood First SDA Church, first found a home in a storefront at 86th and Eastwick. This was in 1942. The West Philadelphia Seventh-day Adventist Church officially began its journey with 34 charter members. Their early years weren’t easy. By 1947, membership dwindled to just 19, with only 11 active members. The thought of disbanding and returning to Ebenezer SDA Church loomed. But the resilient spirit of West Philadelphia Seventh-day Adventist Church prevailed. Leaders like Elders F.L. Bland, A.V. Pinkney, G.E. Peters, C.D. Brooks, and C.L. Brooks kept the faith alive. A new chapter began in 1962. The church purchased a building at 55th and Haverford, fostering a period of steady growth. Then, in 1976, under the leadership of Elder George Braxton, a vision for an even brighter future took hold. Braxton spearheaded the construction of a new building, the very one that stands here today. This expansion allowed the West Philadelphia Seventh-day Adventist Church to flourish. Today, the membership has grown to over 700, a testament to the dedication and perseverance of those early members who gathered in a humble storefront and dreamed of a thriving community of faith. Today, the church continues to serve the community, offering Sabbath School classes at 9:30 am and worship services at 12:00 pm. They even offer online participation, ensuring accessibility for all who seek to connect with their faith. They also invite everyone to join their vibrant community, embracing the spirit of welcome and inclusivity that has defined their journey for over 60 years.
