West New York started as part of Bergen Township in 1798. Later, in 1843, it became part of North Bergen Township. It wasn’t until July 8, 1898, that West New York became its own town. This happened after a referendum.
In the early 20th century, West New York grew fast. Textile industries boomed. This earned North Hudson the nickname Embroidery Capital of the United States. Many Italian and German Americans settled here. Later, in the 1960s, Cuban immigrants arrived. This led to West New York being called Havana on the Hudson. Today, West New York has a majority Hispanic population.
West New York has a rich history. The Lenni Lenape Tribe lived here first. Henry Hudson, an English explorer, arrived in 1609. He worked for the Dutch East India Company. Peter Stuyvesant purchased the land from the Native Americans in 1658. He then gave land to freeholders of Bergen. In 1664, the English took over these lands.
West New York played a role in early settlements. Jacob Brower may have been one of the first settlers. Historical maps show Brower’s Point within West New York. This suggests an early settlement.
In 1898, West New York celebrated its incorporation. Matilda Brill, a schoolteacher, dressed as the Goddess of Liberty. She gave a speech at the gala parade. John E. Otis became West New York’s first mayor. He served from 1898 to 1903.
West New York’s economy changed over time. Swiss immigrants brought the embroidery industry. By 1948, West New York had the largest share of embroidery businesses in America.
