Could a church truly rise from a simple disagreement? The West Medford Baptist Church stands as a testament to just that. Here, in the heart of West Medford, this church has witnessed the evolution of faith, community, and resilience for over a century. Its story begins, not within these walls, but amidst a religious controversy in 17th-century Charlestown, where the teachings of Baptists were viewed with suspicion. The seeds of the West Medford Baptist Church were sown much later, in 1818, when a small group of Baptists began meeting in a private home near the site of the Centre Grammar School on High Street. This small gathering, hosted by Miss Polly Blanchard, marked the humble beginnings of Baptist life in Medford. These individuals, members of neighboring Baptist churches, formed a Baptist Foreign Missionary Society, contributing to the broader Baptist mission. Years later, in 1840, Moses Parsons, a member of the Marshfield Baptist Church, felt the need for a stronger Baptist presence in Medford. He secured the Town Hall for worship and invited Rev. Lucius M. Bolles to preach. This sparked renewed interest, and in 1841, twelve individuals, including Moses Parsons and Polly Blanchard, formally established the First Baptist Church of Medford. They adopted the New Hampshire Articles of Faith, and Robert L. Ells became their first deacon. The congregation grew rapidly, necessitating a move to Salem Street in 1842, where their first church building was erected. The story of the West Medford Baptist Church, however, doesn’t truly begin until 1895. Rev. James P. Abbott, pastor of the First Baptist Church, recognized the need for a separate Baptist presence in West Medford. He encouraged his West Medford parishioners to form their own congregation, a vision that initially faced resistance, especially from George F. Spaulding, who questioned its financial feasibility. Undeterred, the group persevered, holding meetings in homes across West Medford. The first official meeting took place at George F. Spaulding’s home on Monument Street on October 20, 1895. Despite his initial reservations, Mr. Spaulding eventually sold a portion of his Boston Avenue property, paving the way for the church and, interestingly, the parsonage, which was built first. The West Medford Baptist Church was formally recognized by a council of churches in July 1896, solidifying its place within the Baptist community. The cornerstone of the church building was laid on November 24, 1896, and the first service was held on Easter Sunday, April 18, 1897. The West Medford Baptist Church, now a fixture in the community, stands as a tribute to the vision, dedication, and resilience of those who sought to establish a Baptist presence in this part of Medford.
