Did you know a local villager’s dream led to the discovery of a magnificent statue at West Mebon? We stand before West Mebon a temple on an island in the West Baray. This incredible reservoir is the largest in the Angkor area. West Mebon itself is a testament to Khmer artistry. It was built during the 11th century. Kings Suryavarman I and Udayadityavarman II oversaw its construction. It’s a Hindu temple showcasing the Baphuon style of architecture.

The temple’s design is strikingly square. Each side measures roughly 100 meters. Three tower-passages stand on each side. These towers are spaced about 28 meters apart. Stone lotus flowers once crowned their peaks. A central stone platform connects to the eastern wall. A laterite and sandstone causeway links them further.

Sadly much of West Mebon is lost to time. Only the eastern wall and towers remain relatively intact. Their outlines suggest a grander past. The central sanctuary however is gone. Perhaps a smaller structure once stood there.

West Mebon’s religious symbolism is profound. The surrounding moat mirrors the Hindu sea of creation. Being nestled in the vast waters of the West Baray amplifies this. The temple becomes an island a literal representation of a sacred space.

In 1936 an extraordinary discovery occurred. A villager dreamt of a Buddha statue buried here. His dream led to the unearthing of something even more remarkable. A fragment of a reclining Vishnu a colossal bronze sculpture was found. This was the largest known bronze sculpture in Khmer art. It’s now in the National Museum in Phnom Penh. The complete statue would have been about six meters long. Zhou Daguan a Chinese diplomat visited Angkor in the 13th century. He wrote of West Mebon but mistakenly described it as the East Mebon. He also mistook the Vishnu statue for a Buddha.

West Mebon may be partially ruined. But its story of dreams discoveries and religious significance endures. It’s a powerful testament to Khmer artistry and a treasure of Cambodian history. Even in its fragmented state West Mebon captivates and inspires awe.
